Video and Review: Bashy – Life

September 27, 2009

I wanted to do a separate post for a few videos this week rather than just throw them in the catch up post.

This one is Bashy and the video for Life. Firstly, what an awesome Video. Seems like they had a bit of budget to play with and it shows they got a very successful result in return. The original track is Produced by Toddla T (whose also been making moves this year) and is the 3rd single to drop from the album Catch Me If You Can.

But is it a single is what myself and DJ Grind have been discussing. Well the video is powerful, intelligent and current. I understood by listening to Catch Me If You Can that Bashy had a distinctive set of skills with his play on words and delivery of punch lines, but i was pleasantly surprised to witness this video which shows a level of intelligence and creativity that only comes from searching the net for Zeitgeiist and other world media and political content.

So what message do we gather this UK artist is attempting to get across then? I’m not in a position to analyze Bashy as a person, but as an artist i feel he is highly underrated. His album was arguably the best UK product to be released this year so far and has become shadowed by other current UK artists, who are in my opinion, extremely overrated and simple products of a mass media made industry relying on puppets to produce music that kids will talk about on the playground. (No Shots).

Im curious as to the market which Bashy is being directed at. Personally i am a fan and a follower of the message Bashy conducts to his audience. But do the people that listen to Tinchy Stryder, Chipmunk and N-Dubz understand what he is telling them and do they enjoy his video? Or is this simply an artist with free reign adversing his talents and opinions without a corporate and political company dictating what does or does not look great on MTV.

Are we in a 2009 where the average listener of Urban Music wants both sides of the spectrum or is Bashy shooting himself in the foot by not going down a more commercially viable route?
