Clay Shirky: How Twitter Can Make History

While news from Iran streams to the world, Clay Shirky shows how Facebook, Twitter and TXTs help citizens in repressive regimes to report on real news, bypassing censors (however briefly). The end of top-down control of news is changing the nature of politics.

After watching this i was made to think about how we use Social Media and the Internet. How persuasive is Digital Marketing and are we using it to a positive use or negative?

Clay elaborates extensively on the past history of media and communications and identifies the changes over the past 500 years. But how have we dealt with this change?
We have grasped the Internet and taken it for granted. We use Facebook and Twitter to interact but really don’t understand the process of how, what, why, where and when it appeared.

My summary is that, we use social media for our own advantages, oblivious of what our audience is using it for. We can communicate with them if we choose, but on most cases we follow and talk to the people who are in our ‘social groups’ or ‘lifestyle circles.’ The same thing applies to Digital Marketing; you have to identify and choose your market and target them directly. Your product becomes recognized by getting your audience to interact with each other.
They may not have had a reason to interact with each other before you announced your marketing campaign but now they all now share something in common… your product.
